Best Answer

it stays the same or increases with the prey
the prey will run out of food making it's population decrease. that will cause the predator's population to go down because of the lack of food

The "prey population" would decrease. This is because the prey are all being killed and don't reproduce enough to compensate: when the prey population gets low the predator population will too because they will have no prey to eat. When there are less predators, the prey can reproduce and so on. This is a cycle.

The prey population would 'explode' - as there would be nothing killing off the sick and injured animals.

How will the size of a predator population affect the numbers of prey?

This will depend on the specific ecosystem and the specific predator and prey relationship being examined within that ecosystem. If, as an oversimplified example, a drought caused a reduction in edible plant foods for a prey animal, the population of said prey animal may decrease. If the prey population decreased, there would not be enough food to support the current predator population, and a number of the predators would die until a balance was reached. The overall idea is fairly simple, however. If weather conditions are favorable to the increase of the population of a prey species, then the prey species's population will increase, all other things being equal. When the population of a prey species increases, then more of the offspring of the predator species can survive, allowing the population of the predator to increase. If weather somehow decreases the population of a prey animal, then this will also reduce the population of the predator species, all other things being equal. It is important to remember, however, that ecosystems are very complicated and it is rare that a predator will only have one prey item and a prey item will have only one predator. As a result, if a changed condition caused one prey species to decrease but another one to increase, the predator population may not be affected, and so on.

The population size of a predator species is directly controlled by?

The population size (number) of a predator species is directly controlled by the availability of a food source (prey). The more prey available, the greater growth in the number of predator species.

Is the sloth bear a predator or a prey species?

Sloth bears are prey to bengal tigers, but happens on occasion.

How do pedatores help prey?

They keep the population of the prey down, which in turn keeps the population of the predator down. This helps them both not become extinct.

How are the terms predator and prey related?

A prey is what a predator hunts down to kill and eat. A prey's predator is what eats it. For example: A gazelle is the prey of a leopard (predator).

Relationship between a predator and prey?

A predator-prey relationship tends to keep the populations of both species in balance. As the prey population increases, so, after a slight lag, the predator population increases as well. As the number of predators increases, more prey are captured.

What relationship occurs between prey and another organism?

predator kills and eats prey for its survival. When the predator population increases, the prey population decreases because of too many hunters. When the prey population decreases, the predator population decreases because of the lack of food. Then, the prey population increases because there aren't that many predators and the process repeats itself.

What happens to predator population when the prey population increases?

Simply put, the predator population tends to increase, too. Eventually, there is a scarcity of prey, and then the predator population drops because many of them starve. Then the prey population recovers. It's known as "nature balancing herself", and it's been going on for millions of years and yet it is pretty successfully.

Why does the peak population of a predator lag behind the peak population of the prey?

The peak population of a predator lags behind the peak population of the prey because the number of predators will not increase until after the food supply increases. This means that the prey must increase first and then the predator population can grow.

What is most likely to cause increases in a predator population?

All the prey being eaten.

What happens when the cycling of matter in ecosystems is disrupted?

The predator eats the prey in the food chain. As the population is stable, the food chain won't wreck. There's an interdependence between the prey and the predator in the food chain. The prey should be there to feed some food to their predator, and the predator also needs to be there to control their prey population from exploding. Changes in animal population can wreck the food chain. If the prey population decreases, the predator population would also decrease as there'll be less food for them to eat. If the predator population decreases, the prey population would increase because less predators means less preys gets hunted down, so there'll be more preys. If the prey population increases, then the predator population would also increase because there'll be more food for them to eat and there should be more predators to take more control patrol of their prey population. If the predator population increases, then the prey population would decrease because more predators means more preys gets hunted down, so there'll be less preys. Animal Population Change Formula: Prey Decrease→Predator Decrease Predator Decrease→Prey Increase Prey Increase→Predator Increase Predator Increase→Prey Decrease

What is meant by 'predator-prey cycle'?

When the predator eats its prey, the prey population will go down because they're being eaten. Now there's is not enough prey because it has been eaten, there's nothing for the predator to eat. So, some die from startvation. Then the prey population increases because they are not being eaten, since the predators died of starvation. - Alexis (future vet!)

Why is there lag time between the increase in the prey population and the predator population?

Because when a predator feeds on prey, the prey population goes down. When the prey population goes down, then so does the predator population. When the prey population recovers, then the predators soon after prey on the prey, and it repeats.

What happens to predator population when the prey population is eliminated?

The predator population also goes down because there is less for it to eat. This is called the food chain.

What are predator and prey relationships?

This is a much studied relationship that one might learn about in grade 10 science or Biology 11. Predators rely on the population of their prey for sustenance. An increase in predators could lead to a decrease in the population of the prey which in turn leads to a decrease in the predator population. As the predator population decreases the prey population can again increase and the cycle begins anew.

What is meant by 'predator prey cycle'?

the predator-prey cycle is the increase and decrease in population size of the predator and its prey

How do a predator and its prey control each other’s population?

Well, If there is no predator, then the prey's population will be too high and it will eat all of the food it has. Also if there is no prey, then there will be no predator.
