The ocean as a whole is pulled in the direction of the moon, by the moon's gravitational field (the sun also has a tidal effect, although smaller). So water pulled away from an area of low tide is pulled toward an area of high tide.

∙ 13y agoGrounded ships rise from their sandbars. Entryways through ports become deeper, and sometimes wider. Ships sail in and out. Flotsam is delivered to shore to become jetsam and the shoreline changes yet again. The rise -and fall- of the tides -twice daily- are a constant cleansing of the shorelines. Also, there is a definite increase in the activities of the fishes, making them easier for humans to catch, and easier for dolphins to hunt (I've seen that first-hand, myself!).
