As an object expands in size, it's volume increases at a rate much much faster than the rate at which its surface area increases. Since the surface area is vital to exchange of key molecules, a cell that theoretically kept increasing in size would eventually lose the ability to acquire nutrition and expel wastes, among other things that must traverse the membrane. It would become metabolically unsustainable.
