When a position sensor is going bad the engine could run rough, or cut off for no apparent reason. Or, the engine may not start at all.
The engine won't start.
The crankshaft position sensor goes through the bellhousing behind the passenger side cylinder head. The crankshaft position sensor goes through the bellhousing behind the passenger side cylinder head.

That is where the crankshaft position sensor goes.
AN engine that will not run correctly if at all.
The crank sensor (real name is crankshaft position sensor) senses when a notch on the crankshaft goes by and sends a pulse to the car's computer. This tells the computer where the crankshaft is in it's rotation so that the computer will fire the spark plug and injectors at the correct time.
If the sensor is erratic, then the engine could shake or sometimes not run. If the sensor is completely bad, then the car wont start at all.
According to my manual that goes up to 1996, yes the 3.0 does have a crankshaft position sensor.
the crank sensor goes through the top rear of the bell housing.
Not inside, the crankshaft position sensor goes through the top passenger side though.
