Sometimes, and this happens to Thoroughbreds a lot, when their racing career is over, they are put out to stud, which means they earn money by breeding them. So gone to stud can mean two things: 1. It could mean the mare has been sent to be bred. or 2. The stallion has been put out to stud, or has gone to stud, meaning that he is now availble to cover other females.
