Redback spiders are blamed for approximately 250 venomous bites every year in Australia. There may be more that are not recorded, and some of the 250 may be incorrectly attributed to the redback. It is very rare for a redback spider bite to be fatal, and no deaths have been attributed to it since the development of an antivenom. The last confirmed death was in 1953.

The common black house spider eats redback spiders. This probably explains why redbacks are uncommon inside the house. Both redbacks and black house spiders are shy (especially the redback). A house spider will get to recognize you if you feed it ;)
