You can wreck the battery. Get a smart charger or trickle charger to avoid this problem.

No. There is not possible way for them to wear out. There is a myth that if your battery is still plugged in that the battery drains it charge. It's nothing serious (just recharge the battery) and I don't know if it's true, but I would unplug your battery when your done using it.
The battery will attempt to charge the charger since the battery is at a higher voltage than the charger. Thus, the battery will simply discharge and generate heat.
