Your dog will be examined, have presurgical blood work done, and if the results are good they will prep her for the spay. This includes giving a premedication that makes it easier to induce her to the anesthetic. This makes your dog a little sleepy and sometimes naseous depending on the premed they choose. Then an IV catheter will be placed in her front leg and she will be hooked up to IV fluidsto help keep her blood pressure up during surgeery and keep her hydrated for a speedy recovery. Next an induction drug will be given through her IV line, to basically make her 'fall asleep'. When she is asleep, a endotracheal tube will be put into her trachea and that tube gets hooked up to an anesthetic machine which mixes an anesthetic gas such as isoflurane with oxygen. This keeps her asleep and feeling no pain. She will then have her belly shaved and usually her nails trimmed. Then she will move into the surgery room where she will be hooked up to a heart moniter, oxygen moniter and blood pressure moniter and have a surgical scrub ( washing her belly with an antiseptic soap and disinfectant) After that the Veterinarian will place a sterile drape on her with a hole in the middle where the incision is to be made. The incision will be made just below the umbilicus ( belly button) and above the vulva. It will be on the linea alba. This allows her to have access to her uterus and ovaries which will be clamped and tied with a dissolvable ligature to stop any bleeding and promote healing. The uterus and overies will be removed and then the incision will be closed, usually also with dissolvable sutures ( stitches) . When this is done she will be taken off the moniters, taken off the anesthetic and then moved to a recovery kennel where someone will stay with her until she starts to wake up. When she starts to wake up, the tube in her trachea will be removed and they will take her temperature, pulse and resperation. She will then be moniterd until she goes home, most likely with a painkiller.
