Solute can not dissolve a solvent. Only it gets dissolved in the solvent.

Normally heat of solution is observed. It is called "Enthalpy" denoted by the symbol H. If the value of enthalpy is >0 it is endothermic - means you need heat to dissolve the solute in the solution.

If it is <0 it is endothermic. ΔH is the expression of enthalpy.

For a homogenous system, H=U+pV where, U= internal energy of the system, p= pressure of the system and V= Volume of the system (Thermodynamics)

Only in the case of ideal solutions ΔH will be zero.

The unit of expression is J/mol

Some examples:

1. Ammonium nitrate is sparingly soluble in normal temperature (endothermic)

2. Caustic flakes (NaOH) evolve heat when dissolving in solution.
