Best Answer

Carbon dioxide, Oxygen, water vapor, and other gases enter and exit the stoma. They open during the day because plants need to take in raw materials (Such as the three listed at the beginning of the answer) to make food.

In a cell, Potassium ions will enter the vacuoles of guard cells around a stomata. Then there will be a high concentration of Potassium ions in the guard cells' vacuoles and, consequently, the guard cells' vacuoles will become hypertonic. As a result, water will rush in to the guard cells' vacuoles in order to make the guard cells isotonic. As the water rushes in, the vacuoles swell and bend, thus opening the stomata. To close the stomata, Potassium will leave the guard cells' vacuoles, and the vacuoles will become hypotonic. In order to become isotonic, water will rush out of the guard cell vacuole, the vacuoles will relax, and the stomata will close again.

State the function of the structures called stomata that are present in leaf epidermis?

The leaf surface has many tiny apertures called stomata. During respiration oxygen from the atmosphere diffuses into the stomata and then into the cells of the leaf. When carbon dioxide concentration in the cells increases, the stomata opens and releases carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.

How the opening and closing of leaf stomata is controlled?

The stomata are controlled by two epidermal cells called guard cells. When water flows in, the guard cells swell up and closes the stomata. When the water leaves, it becomes flaccid and opens the stomata.

What are stomata or stomate?
