You will lose all custom settings in the BIOS, and the BIOS will revert to the basic default every time the computer is restarted.

What happens after a transmission starts smoking, depends on what causes it to smoke. It could run for awhile, and just need new seals, or it could seize up and die.
If you suck on a battery, nothing will happen, but you will be sucking in bacteria. If you swallow one (which is unlikely to happen to anyone) then you'd probably die.
Battery backup systems would be great in the event of power failures and outages. They would also be good to have if your main battery happens to die suddenly.

A mobile battery can be used at anytime unless it is damaged. The longer you store the battery, the shorter it will last. All batteries get ruined, even if not used. This has to do with the chemicals inside the battery. It's suggested you use it while you last. You have a good 3-4 years or more until the battery starts to die.
