It needs to be on the boundary between the two column headings. When it is in the right place, a double-arrowed line will appear, indicating that the column can be widened or narrowed.
excel sums the cells in the column
It is the first column in a table on the left. In a spreadsheet it would be column A. In Access it would the column for the first field. In a table in Word, it would be the first column on the left.
