Can a plant grow faster in sunlight or if you water it?

Due to photosynthesis, plants need both sunlight and water. The answer to your question is no. Without both sunlight and water, the plant would die. If you want to do some science, you could plant three of the exact plant and one gets water, one gets sunlight and another gets both. You'll be able to see that if you both water and give them sunlight, they will grow the fastest.

What happens to plants if it gets too much sunlight and water?

If a plant gets too much water, the plant will rot. water builds up in the soil until there is no room for oxygen, and the roots die. when the roots die, the plant can no longer take up nutrients, and it slowly rots. otherwise a fungal infection will develop and also rot the plant.
