It depends on what version of D+D you're playing. For the versions 3.5 here's what happens:
1. Your health points go up (roll your hit-dice and add the constitution modifier)
2. You gain a certain amount of skill points that you can spend based on your intelligence modifier
3. If this is your third level gain you get to pick a new feat
4. If this is your forth level gain you get to add one point to one of the main skills (Constitution, Intelligence, Charisma, so on)
5. Your saving throw bases will go up, consult your players guide for the new base.
6. Characters that can use spells can gain new spells, consult the players guide for how many
7. Other ability's may also go up so make sure to understand the player guide
