It depends on what you will be doing, but a core knowledge of PC hardware and software is required. The best way to start is to get (or study for) your A+ Certification because it focuses on how everything works, which is key to troubleshooting.

It is also imperative to understand networking and there is advanced training for that.

The more you learn, the more valuable of an employee you will be. It is important to keep up with technology and you may find yourself taking extra courses during your career to do so.

In my opinion, actually working in the field is the best teacher that you can have, so you would benefit yourself by getting in somewhere and working your way up. They may also pay for your school as well.

Good luck!

To be a computer technician you don't need a degree. You need certifications. The A+ certification is required and preferably a MCSA so that you are certified to work on Windows machines. The days of being able to get a job as a computer technician without certifications is long gone.
