Since his crew stole or eat from Helios's cattle , Zeus punish them by attacking their ship. only Odysseus survives and ends up in Calypso's island, a nymph, where she keeps him captive because she likes him. She makes him sleep with her ,but lets him go later because she sees that's he is sad, and also Zeus sends the messenger god to tell her to release him and to give him a boat.

After leaving Helios' island, Odysseus and his crew encountered a series of challenges including the island of the Cyclops Polyphemus, the enchantress Circe, the Sirens, Scylla and Charybdis, and finally the island of the sun god Helios. Most of his crew perished due to their disobedience in not to eat the cattle of Helios. Odysseus survived these trials and continued his journey towards home in Ithaca.

He wanted to drive Apollo's fiery chariot carring Helios across the sky despite being warned that not even Zeus himself would drive it. He held stead fast saying he would. The chariot began to go out of control and set fire to the ground Zeus himself had to stop the chariot with a lighting bolt. In most cases, Phaethon was considered a son of Helios, and asked Helios for permission to ride his chariot, since Helios had promised on the river Styx to fulfill his request. Having no other choice, Helios had to allow his son to drive the chariot and get struck by Zeus' lightning bolt.
