Also known as Lady Mendl, Elsie de Wolfe was a high society American interior decorator in the early 1900s. She was instrumental in helping many of the wealthier families (the Vanderbilts and the Windsors were some of her clients) transition from the dreary Victorian period to a brighter style, drawing her inspiration from 18th century France.
Elsie de Wolfe was not the first interior designer, however, she was the most famous in the early 20th century.
