The most important thing is what is in the collection and what condition they are in. Big collectors and auction houses like Docks and Naucks are only looking for cream of the crop stuff that they will pay next to nothing for it and sell for hundreds. The problem with Ebay is the shipping. They are so breakable they have to be packed very well and the shipping costs have just gone through the ceiling. You might win a record for a dollar but pay $12.00 in shipping. The 78 trade has really gone down on Ebay. If it's not something of real rarity it usually doesn't sell. Most 78's are only worth 50 cents to a dollar as they are in lesser condition. But, there are still plenty of new young people getting into the collecting game and they will take whatever they can get to have the records they want. At least they have a copy and will keep it until they can upgrade to a copy in better condition. Don't just throw them away. Advertise them. Most cities have a free advertising site. But, be ready to have all the records in a list with the artist name, the title of both sides of the record, the label and the label number. Someone might just buy that whole collection for one record. You have to ask yourself, "Do I want to get rid of them?" If you are only interested in the money, plan on holding onto them for a long time. If you just want to make room, sell a large stack for $20.00 to average out to 75 cents a piece or a dollar a piece if they are in super clean condition.
