Tufi Duek was born on May 31, 1954, in Nilpolis, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In his series of paintings titled "Goyita," artist Rafael Tufi Ntildeo represents the figure of Goya's Maja, a symbol of femininity and beauty. He reinterprets this iconic image to explore themes of identity, culture, and the influence of historical art on contemporary society. Through his work, Tufi Ntildeo connects traditional art with modern narratives, highlighting the complexities of representation in both art and culture.
You are likely thinking of the High-temperature reusable surface insulation (HRSI) tiles. These are part of the larger thermal protection system (TPS) which also includes the Low-temperature Reusable Surface Insulation (LRSI) tiles, Toughened unipiece fibrous insulation (TUFI) tiles as well as the Felt reusable surface insulation (FRSI) blankets and Flexible Insulation Blankets (FIB).

Most of the surface of the shuttle is covered with special insulating materials designed to protect the airframe and the people inside from the extreme heat of re-entry. The insulating materials also protect them from the cold temperatures and radiation of space while they are aloft. Different areas have different properties, depending on the amount of heat protection required. The nose cap and wing leading edges are exposed to the highest heat during reentry - more than 1,260 °C (2,300 °F). Carbon fiber-reinforced carbon (aka carbon-carbon, abbreviated C/C) is used here.Note that while C/C has excellent thermal resistance & thermal shock resistance and a low thermal expansion coefficient, it is not as impact resistant as some of the other materials. It is believed that damage sustained during takeoff to the C/C on the leading edge of one of the wings to the space shuttle Columbia was the cause of the catastrophic failure during reentry that destroyed that shuttle. Most of the underside of the fuselage is covered with either high-temperature reusable surface insulation (HRSI) tiles (coated LI-900 Silica ceramics) or fibrous refractory composite insulation (FRCI) tiles. These are a little tougher than the C/C and tolerate temperatures up to about 1,260 °C (2,300 °F).Flexible Insulation Blankets (FIB), a quilted, flexible blanket-like surface insulation is used where reentry temperature is below 649 °C (1,200 °F). Earlier shuttles used Low-temperature Reusable Surface Insulation (LRSI) tiles on the upper fuselage and some may remain, but most or all of these were replaced by FIB as the shuttles were refurbished after each flight.Starting in 1996 some tiles on the belly of the shuttle and elsewhere were also replaced with Toughened Unipiece Fibrous Insulation (TUFI) tiles. The top and sides of the shuttle are exposed to much lower temperatures so white Nomex felt blankets are used on the upper payload bay doors, portions of the midfuselage and aft fuselage sides, portions of the upper wing surface and a portion of the OMS/RCS (Orbital Maneuvering System/Reaction Control System) pods. Nomex is a flame resistant meta-aramid, kind of like Kevlar. Kevlar is a para-aramid), but stiffer and with better temperature, chemical, and radiation resistance. Each type of insulation has specific heat protection, impact resistance, and weight characteristics, which determine the locations where it is used and the amount used.

The Space Shuttle thermal protection system (TPS) is the barrier that protects the Space Shuttle Orbiter during the searing 1,650 °C (3,000 °F) heat of atmospheric reentry. A secondary goal is to protect from the heat and cold of space while on orbit.MaterialsThe TPS covers essentially the entire orbiter surface, and consists of seven different materials in varying locations based on amount of required heat protection:Reinforced carbon-carbon (RCC), used in the nose cap, the chin area between the nose cap and nosewheel doors, and wing leading edges. Used where reentry temperature exceeds1,260 °C (2,300 °F).High-temperature reusable surface insulation (HRSI) tiles, used on the orbiter underside. Made of coated LI-900Silica ceramics. Used where reentry temperature is below 1260 °C.Fibrous refractory composite insulation (FRCI) tiles, used to provide improved strength, durability, resistance to coating cracking and weight reduction. Some HRSI tiles were replaced by this type.Flexible Insulation Blankets (FIB), a quilted, flexible blanket-like surface insulation. Used where reentry temperature is below 649 °C (1,200 °F).Low-temperature Reusable Surface Insulation (LRSI) tiles, formerly used on the upper fuselage, but now mostly replaced by FIB. Used in temperature ranges roughly similar to FIB.Toughened unipiece fibrous insulation (TUFI) tiles, a stronger, tougher tile which came into use in 1996. Used in high and low temperature areas.Felt reusable surface insulation (FRSI). White Nomex felt blankets on the upper payload bay doors, portions of the midfuselage and aft fuselage sides, portions of the upper wing surface and a portion of the OMS/RCS pods. Used where temperatures stay below 371 °C (700 °F).Each type of TPS has specific heat protection, impact resistance, and weight characteristics, which determine the locations where it is used and the amount used. The shuttle TPS has three key characteristics that distinguish it from the TPS used on previous spacecraft:Reusable. Previous spacecraft generally used ablative heat shields which burned off during reentry and so couldn't be reused. This insulation was robust and reliable, and the single-use nature was appropriate for a single-use vehicle. By contrast, the reusable shuttle required a reusable thermal protection system.Lightweight. Previous ablative heat shields were very heavy. For example the ablative heat shield on the Apollo Command Module comprised about 1/3 of the vehicle weight. The winged shuttle had much more surface area than previous spacecraft, so a lightweight TPS was crucial.Fragile. The only known technology in the early 1970s with the required thermal and weight characteristics was also so fragile, due to the very low density, that one could easily crush a TPS tile by hand.
