Our solar system is located in the thin disk of the Milky Way.

What is the collection of ancient stars found in the center of the local group called?

The collection of ancient stars found in the center of the Local Group is called the Galactic Halo. The Galactic Halo is a spherical region of space that surrounds the disk of the Milky Way galaxy. It is made up of old, metal-poor stars that are thought to have formed very early in the history of the Milky Way. The Galactic Halo is also home to globular clusters, which are dense groups of hundreds of thousands of stars. The Galactic Halo is thought to be the remnant of a smaller galaxy that merged with the Milky Way billions of years ago. The merger caused the smaller galaxy to be torn apart, and its stars were scattered into the Galactic Halo. The Galactic Halo is a very sparsely populated region of space. The stars are so far apart that they are difficult to see individually with the naked eye. However, the Galactic Halo can be seen in the night sky as a faint glow of light.

How many earth days is on milky way?

The stellar disk of the Milky Way galaxy is approximately 100,000 light years in diameter, and is believed to be, on average, about 1,000 light years thick. It is estimated to contain at least 200 billion stars and possibly up to 400 billion stars, the exact figure depending on the number of very low mass stars, which is highly uncertain. Extending beyond the stellar disk is a much thicker disk of gas. Recent observations indicate that the gaseous disk of the Milky Way has a thickness of around 12,000 light years ---twice the previously accepted value. The Sun (and therefore the Earth and Solar System) may be found close to the inner rim of the Galaxy's Orion Arm, in the Local Fluff inside the Local Bubble, and in the Gould Belt, at a distance of ~25,000 light years from the Galactic Center. So a rough estimate, because there is no real defined outer edge, puts our solar system about 25 thousand light years from the edge of the Milky Way Galaxy. [See Link] for pictorial impression of our location in the Milky Way.

What is a huge spiraling disk of stars and dust and gas called?

Spiral galaxy.

What percentage of stars in the sky are not in the milky way?

That depends on how you define the "Milky Way". Technically, the "Milky Way" refers to a faint band of light that crosses the night sky. This band is how we see the star-dense disk of our galaxy from our vantage point inside that disk. Our galaxy was named for this band of light, and called the "Milky Way Galaxy". Note that the "Milky Way" and the "Milky Way Galaxy" refer to two different things. The answer also depends on what you mean by "stars in the sky". Do you mean the stars that can be seen from Earth? And if so, with the naked eye, or with a telecope? How powerful a telescope? Or do you mean every star that is "out there", i.e., every star in the universe, whether we can see it or not? I could sit here all day researching and entering answers to all the different ways this question could be interpreted. But I'm not going to waste that kind of time until you tell me what you are talking about. However, there is one way of interpreting this question that I already know the answer to, and I will give you that answer here. If the "Milky Way" means the galaxy, and if "stars in the sky" means stars visible, with the naked eye, from Earth's surface, then the answer is zero. There are no stars outside of our galaxy that are visible from here on Earth. There are a few "objects" outside our galaxy that are visible with the naked eye. But these objects are, for the most part, galaxies themselves, not individual stars. They are so far away that their immense masses appear to us as tiny pinpoints of light, indistinguishable from the true stars we can see. In fact, they are dimmer than most of the stars we can see. In all of the universe, I believe there is not a single individual star outside of our galaxy that is bright enough to be seen from Earth with the naked eye. But I may be wrong on that. There MAY be a couple of stars in one of the Magellanic Clouds that can be seen. But even if that is the case, the answer to the question is still, essentially, zero.

What is the spherical region surrounding the disk of a spiral galaxy which contains globular clusters and reddish population II stars called?

Is the milky way considered a clump of stars?

No. It is a disk-shaped galaxy, like a pinwheel, with several curved radial arms and a large mass at the center. The closest thing to a "clump" of stars are the so-called "globular clusters" which are more spherical in organization than other common galaxies.

Are groups of stars that are usually located along the spiral disk of a galaxy.?

Clusters - either open or globular.

The Milky Way is a disk of stars with the sun near the center.

Why does the milky way look like a hazy band of stars in the sky?

The galaxy is covered in dust. A large but very faint layer of stars surrounds the disk and bulge. In addition to stars, the Milky Way contains clouds of gas and dust called nebulae.

What is milky way best described as?

It is the SOLAR SYSTEM where the Earth is part of it( A Solar System Consists of Planets, Moon, Stars like SUN, Asteroids, Meteors, Comets and sometimes Black Hole).Above the surface of the Milky Way, Millions and Billions of Cluster of Stars are Scattered around it. A Cluster of Stars are made up of Looking-Young Stars but, They are actually old since the Milky Way was formed around 12 Billion Yrs. old.
