HST is a Cassegrain reflecting telescope using the Ritchey–Chrétien design, with an aperture of 7.9' (2.4m). It has observational ability in the Ultraviolet, Infrared, and Visible light spectrums.
It was launched in 1990 with an anticipated life span of 25 years. The first servicing mission by the Space Shuttle in 1993 made repairs to correct errors in the optical telescope, and subsequent missions added new instruments. It is expected to reenter the Earth's atmosphere sometime after 2018, and NASA has plans to attach a booster rocket using a robot probe, so that Hubble's reentry can be controlled to miss human habitations and land in the ocean.
The slight optical defect (known as a spherical aberration, and less than 4 microns, 1/5 the thickness of a human hair) discovered in the Hubble's primary mirror after it was deployed in space, was corrected by a system known as COSTAR (Corrective Optics Space Telescope Axial Replacement). Built by Ball Aerospace, it was manufactured and tested between the Hubble's first deployment and her First Servicing Mission in 1993.COSTAR (since replaced, as all Hubble instruments installed after the FSM have corrective optics) worked much like corrective eyeglasses, using a system of tiny mirrors to correct for the flaw. The result of COSTAR's installation (and all of us who worked on it waited with our breath held until it was operational and the first pictures were in) was nothing less than spectacular, restoring Hubble to its original design specifications.

Hubble is the name of a giant telescope that is in space. It is known as the Hubble Space Telescope and it is named after Edwin Hubble, who was a famous astronomer. It is very large and because it is outside the Earth's atmosphere it can get a clearer view of the stars, constellations, galaxies and other things it looks at, compared to a ground-based telescope. It has got some wonderful photographs and many new things have been seen with it and many new things have been learned about space by using it. That is why it is so important.

The Hubble Space Telescope was flown into space aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, mission STS-31, on April 24, 1990. On the subsequent servicing mission, in December, 1993, flaws in the original optics were corrected.
The problem with Hubble Space Telescope (the HST, or just the "Hubble") was that the primary reflector, that is, the mirror which redirects the incoming light to focus it, was ground using an incorrectly calibrated reference as a guide. This left it "out of focus" in areas farther from the center. There were a couple of checks for accuracy made with secondary references, and they were off, but the "warning" was ignored and the opinion was offered that the two secondary references were not as accurate as the primary reference was.
