The organ responsible for the formation of food substances is the pancreas. It secretes digestive enzymes that aid in the breakdown of food in the small intestine.
Digestion is the breakdown of absorbed substances, Respiration, on the other hand, is the breakdown of food molecules with a release of energy.
Saliva in the mouth helps to soften food as you chew it. Saliva helps begin the breakdown of foods.
Mechanical breakdown helps chemical breakdown because when you chew, chemical breakdown is going on all at the same time. So, that is going to chemical because if you didn't have saliva (chemical breakdown) if would take real long to digest your food.
The breakdown of complex components of food into simpler substances is called digestion.
Your saliva breaks down the food along with your teeth and your tongue helps you swallow it.
The human digestive system needs glandular tissue to secrete the many substances needed to break down food both mechanically and chemically. Saliva and bile help with the physical breakdown of food. Many other substances, including gastric secretions and pancreatic fluid, assist with chemical breakdown of food.
they speed up the breakdown of food in the stomach and small intestine
Digest is a strong word so I am going to say no. Saliva can helps breakdown food compound but it is in fact not strong enough to fully breakdown or "digest" food. In fact, teeth and chewing helps saliva in breaking food down. Also, saliva can only breakdown carbohydrates compound. Proteins, fats and fibres need stronger and different enzyme. PS: saliva is essentially an enzyme
