the main theme, i think in this story, is culture, meaning what happens when you die, there fore when meji comes back, they don't know, they only know he is acting weird ex. doesnt eat food, wears a scarf "so his head doesnt fall off" comes in a locked house those are some examples, i have an English class and we are doing a group project on this story, so i have to find the deeper meaning, wich like i said, i think the story is trying to make readers think "what happens when we die" that's what i think!! and my group does too let me know if this helps u!!
