A myelin sheath wrapped around the axon of a neuron.

Neurons consist of three parts: a cell body, dendrites, and an axon. The dendrites are responsible for receiving stimuli from other nearby neurons. The stimulus is transferred down the dendrites into the cell body. From the cell body, the stimulus will travel down the axon, which is a long extension of the neuron.

Axons are surrounded by a myelin sheath, multi-layered covering made up of proteins and lipids; which are produced by Schwann cells. The myelin sheath acts as an insulator. Gaps within the myelin sheath are referred to as nodes of Ranvier. The impulse jumps from one node to the next very rapidly, which is one of the main advantages for an axon to myelinated.
