There are various Lord of the Games. Many of them are on the computer but there are games that involve physical models. There is Lord of the Ring Strategy Battle Game (SBG) and War of the Ring (WOTR) both of these have extensive rulebooks and minitures which are sold through Games Workshop.
In the older times there could have been a war like Lord of the rings.
The War of the Ring takes place in the years 3017-3018 of Middle-earth's Third Age.
THERE WAS NEVER A LORD OF THE RINGS TOTAL WAR GAME ! but empire total war is good but every total war game was good :)
The Lord of the Rings trilogy was first released in 2001 titled The Lord of the Rings the Fellowship of the Ring then followed by The Lord of the Rings The Two Towers released in 2002 and the last sequel was the The Lord of the Rings The Return of the King released in 2003.
I'm not sure what you mean by 'age'. In Middle-earth, the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings took place late in the Third Age. The Fourth Age begins when Elrond leaves Middle-earth for Valinor soon after the War of the Ring.

The third part in J.R.R. Tolkien's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy is titled "The Return of the King." It concludes the epic story of Frodo and his companions' quest to destroy the One Ring and defeat Sauron.
