Dickens was involved in several philanthropic efforts to relieve the poor in London; he contributed generously of his time and money. He was also an enthusiastic amateur playwright, producer and actor. In fact, he almost became an actor rather than a writer, but was sidetracked when he was too sick to go to the audition he'd managed to obtain. His readings from his novels were incredibly popular, bringing in SRO crowds every night. Mesmerism, the use of hypnotism to treat illness, was another of Dickens's interests. After attending Dr. Franz Anton Mesmer's lectures in 1838, Dickens became an active practitioner and was able to help many people.
