Most colonial people had to work long hours to sustain their daily needs, they didn't have a lot of time for hobbies. Those that did, usually had hobbies that supplemented their everyday lives. For example, a blacksmith might also have a vegetable garden; a housewife might do embroidery, a butcher might do woodworking in his spare time. Anyone who was able and so inclined might enjoy reading or writing. Until the Victorian era, only those who were well to do enough to hire people to do everyday chores had more frivolous hobbies such as card playing or collecting butterflies.
