Just under the emergency brake, is the hood release. Pull the release, which pops the hood. Get out of the van and walk around front. In the front center of the hood is a latch, you can feel with your fingers. lift the latch up, while lifting the hood. There is a rod located on the left side that holds up the hood. On a Classic Bug you don't need one. There's a spring in the middle of the hood (the one over the engine) that holds it up for you, and the trunk lid has hinges with springs in them.
