On July 1st 1916 the Royal Newfoundland Regiment suffered a reeling defeat at the hands of the Germans losing more than 700 men entering battle with 800 only 68 men answered roll call. This loss affected the Newfoundland population greatly. In an effort to remember and commemorate those fallen, Newfoundland and Labrador celebrate "Memorial Day" every July 1st.
