The polar bear was over hunted many years ago. Thankfully, it is not an endangered species any longer and continues to grow in numbers today. From a low of about 800 they now number well over 20,000.
Some people claim that should the ice caps of the North disappear that polar bears would have problems. This may well be the case if they have no adaptive skills. This is not currently an issue.

Many cultures refrained from taking the best of the stock, in admiration and respect for that species. The gray wolf is currently not an endangered species. It has a very large range, occurs in several subspecies, and it's status is listed as "least concern".
