Best Answer

The word shrapnel describes a piece or pieces of artillery shell or bomb. The British army officer and inventor Henry Shrapnel made a hollow cannon ball filled with gunpowder and lead balls for use as an anti-personnel weapon, which was adopted by the British army in 1803. Ever since, his name has been used to describe fragments of explosive shells.
