Fascism was what caused World War 2, but Communism was what resulted from it. Hitler and the fascist country Germany ultimately started the war by invading other countries while the main powers (US, France, Great Britain, Russia) decided to appease the fuhrer and let him take his land.

Fascism
Actually, Fascism (at least the Nazi Germany version) was basically Communism without the idea of Nationalism. Hitler revered the Communist philosophy, he just believed Fascism was better because it described ones primary loyalty to the state.
Fascism was popular in Italy because Benito Mussolini adopted the idea and introduced it to Italian politics. Fascists main competitor were communists. One thing you should always know is that fascists absolutely HATE communism. France did not adopt communism because of their affiliations with the other allies during WWI.
It is an idea and an idea doesn't have a taste.
