The magna carta was forced by the french-Norman barons in 1215 to restrict the powers of the king (King John at that time) .It forced him to take advice, promoted no-royal influence in national affais and stipulated that no citizen could be punished without a fair trial, but the real reason behind the magna carta was to protect the wealth of the aristocracy which was repeatedly exploited by the king to wage wars.

The demands of the Magna Carta were that King John would govern England and deal with its people according to the customs of feudal law. It was an attempt of the barons to keep the King from abusing his power. Important points of the Magna Carta were laws that were good and fair, everyone shall have access to courts and that costs and money should not be an issue if someone wanted to take a problem to the law courts, and that no freeman will be punished and sent to prison without first going through the courts. Freeman was later changed to include everyone.
The Power of kings was severely limited as kings now had to listen to a group of other people (what would develop into the first parliament of England), and the king was no longer above the law. However, in reality, little of the changes were actually implemented on right away. It would take years for kings to truly abide to the document but the Magna Carta was still the first step to limiting the king's powers.
When the nobles got tired of king john they decided to take away the knighs till he agreed to sign their instructions to him. This was known as the Magna Carta
