They didn't like Lincoln because he was against slavery and wanted to abolish it. They also didnt like Lincoln because he issued the Emancipation Proclamation setting the slaves in rebellious southern states free. Hoped this helped! <3
Well Lincoln said all slaves in the SOUTH were free and northern border states still had slaves. and its not like it worked. Its like Mexico saying every Latino prisoner is free to go in the US the us wont listen Lincoln only used it for rebellion causes.
It applied to slaves in the states that were in rebellion (where, of course, Lincoln had no authority at that time). It did not apply to slaves in the four slave-states that had remained loyal. Lincoln did not want to upset powerful slave-owners in these states, and drive them into the arms of the Confederacy.
Lincoln didn't expect it to end the war, though he was hoping that some of the Southern states would abolish slavery in response to it. The main object was to keep Britain and France from aiding the Confederates, for fear of looking pro-slavery themselves.
Because it would have had the same disastrous effect on Northern farmers as it did on Southern ones, and would have hampered the war effort. It confirms that Lincoln was not passionately anti-slavery. Emancipation was a war measure, not principally a crusade.
Lincoln had to wait for a Union victory. Antietam Was the victory he needed. The Emancipation Proclamation changed the course of the war. It went from defeating the Rebels of the South to freeing the slaves. In every place that the Union army could take, the Slaves were all freed. This was a huge boost to the troops. They were now fighting to free people. Freeing all the slaves would have done nothing to keep the men fighting. the fight needed a better cause. Is there a better cause than Freedom? Fighting to unite the Country and fighting for freedom are far different things. Even today fighting for freedom is still top on everyones list.
White southerners where horrified. They were worried that the slaves would revolt. The slaves were confused but were free they started a revolt and put the confederacy into financial struggles .
I believe it was the day Abraham Lincoln issued the emancipation pr oclamation. It didnt set all the slaves free but it was truly the start...Look it up in a good ol' History Book! -Taylor H
Emancipation Proclimation, passed by President Abraham Lincoln after the civil war, announced that all slaves in the won territories in the Confederate States were freed, and they called it "Juneteenth".
France and the UK were seriously considering intervening in the US Civil War because they needed Southern cotton for their industrial production. However, with the Emancipation Proclamation, US President Lincoln made the US Civil War about slavery and the French and British public would not have supported a war to defend slavery.
He promoted and helped to assure the passage (though its final application happened after his assassination) of the 13th Amendment to the United States Constitution which made slavery illegal.
Abraham Lincoln was preoccupied during his presidency with the Civil War and maintaining the union in spite of it. He is, perhaps, best known for his hand in the abolition of slavery. He also had success in banking and commerce.
