A female dogs gets some real health benefits if she is spayed before the onset of her first heat cycle. If that opportunity is missed, she can be spayed at any time.

An adult female dog will have heat cycles (the 21 day period of time when she can get pregnant and have bloody discharge) about twice a year, for her entire life. Dogs do not have a menopause, as human women do. It is unhealthy for the dog to have a litter after 6 or 7 years of age.

Because of the very high incidence of accidental litters in unspayed dogs, you should have your dog spayed. There are many free and reduced cost spay clinics throughout the country. Contact your vet or local animal shelter to see what spay programs are in your area.
