What if you don't finish taking your antibiotics for chlamydia?

If you believe that your chlamydia infection is resistant to doxycycline, you should contact your local department of health for advice, chlamydia culture, and consultation with public health authorities. Currently, there is not believed to be a problem with antibiotic resistance with chlamydia. If you believe you are among the first with this problem, you need to contact DOH for help.

The most common reason people appear not to be cured of chlamydia is reinfection. Abstain from sex until you and your partner have completed treatment.

Treatment failure with chlamydia is so rare that all cases should be reported to the CDC. Your health care provider should refer you to an infectious disease specialist for further evaluation. But first, make sure you have clarified how you know that your treatment didn't cure chlamydia. Are you basing your diagnosis of treatment failure on repeat testing or continuing symptoms? If you're having symptoms, make sure other infections, especially trichomoniasis and ureaplasma, were ruled out. If you're basing it on testing, make sure that you waited long enough for retesting. You'll get a false positive result if you test within weeks of completing treatment. Make sure all partners also completed treatment.
