How do you prevent getting tetanus?
When you're an adult, you don't have to get your tetanus shot every 10 years if you don't want to. Doctors don't have time to chase everybody to make sure they have their shots every 10 years. They have more important things to do than that. If you have diabetes, epilepsy, asthma, HIV, cancer or any other uncurable disease, your physician can force you to get vaccinated every 10 years. He/she can force you to get the flu shot every year if you have health problems. But as long as you're an adult and you have no health problems, they can't force you to get a tetanus shot. If you have a bad burn, a deep cut that requires stitches, an animal bite or a surgery, the doctors can force you to get your tetanus shot. If they don't force you to get your tetanus shot and you develop diphteria or the tetanus disease, you could sue the doctors. Or if you're in a position where you can't sue ( wich would probably be the case), your family would sue the doctors for you.

If I would've got diphteria or tetanus, my family wouldn't have been able to sue.
What is the argument between the 5 and 10 year time period for a tetanus shot?
There is no argument. The recommendations are clear. Once the person has had the adolescent tetanus booster, usually given at 11-14 years of age, tetanus is recommended to be boosted routinely every 10 years. If you have a deep cut or puncture wound it should be updated unless it is well documented to have been given within the last 5 years. There is a new tetanus shot that includes a booster to pertussis (whooping cough - Tdap, Adacel, Boostrix) that was created because adults have been found to be getting pertussis. It is recommended that people under 65 get this shot if it has been more than 2 years since their last booster with the old tetanus shot (dT). One other factor, is that Medicare, in keeping with its tradition of paying for illness but not prevention, does not pay for tetanus shots unless it is to treat a deep cut or wound (but it is still recommended).

On the safety team where I currently work, our definition of a recordable injury is 3 part-when a person requires a perscription, a Dr.'s exam AND loss of time for an accident that occured at work. Not sure of the logic there but, it is what it is. My last place of employment considered a recordable injury as one that involved loss of time from work ONLY, such as going home or to an Emergency room. But, in both cases, a Tetanus shot is cosidered preventative medicine and was not only encouraged but, at one place even administered AT WORK.

Yes. Tins are stored for a very long period of time in non hygienic environments. If the cut is deep enough to expose the bone, then you need a tetanus shot as soon as possible.
