Answer
If you leave the US and have credit card debts there, or any other type of debts, not to worry, they won't chase after you into Another Country, but don't go back to the States thinking that after a few months they will have written you off, nope, not likely. They will hunt you down like a dog and possibly take you to court, not only for what you owed when you left, but any interest that may have accumalated. If I were you I'd contact them from where ever you are now, and try to make arrangements to pay them. Tell them that you are willing to pay the capitol, but and only if they drop the Interest charges. You might be surprised at how willing they will be to please you, but it really depends on how much money you owe them.

I owe credit cards companies in the US. Can they collect it in The Netherlands?
You will have to pay the debt + interest on your return to the US assuming the debt collectors have not chased you down in India already.

It is possible.
No, there are no debtor prisons in the United States. Being in debt is not a crime. If all the consumers who had credit card debt were arrested, there would be nothing but prisons in America. The average American has approximately $8000 of credit card debt. This does not include those of us with defaulted or derogatory accounts.
No one. The person left is not responsible for the debt. The credit cards want people to think that the family owes for the deceased debt, but they don't.
yes the debt still exists.you can probably go back, but they may never let you leave again until you pay it off. I'm in about same boat. 53000 in student loans to pay off.

"US credit crisis starts because too many people are in debt, including the US itself. Credit is sometimes easly obtained but hard to repay."
I am curious, how did you get your university degree???? credit card debt is ok, 1000 is pretty low and they tend to write off to the tune of 10,000-20,000. But school tuition defaulting is serious, i am surprised they did not send you a letter to your home address.
If the person left a Will then Probating the Will will pay all debts the person has left behind and what is left in the Estate (is called 'residue) and this is what is left for the Heirs in the Will. If the person dies without a Will whatever they have is sold and debts paid off, but it's not up to next of kin (unless their name is on the credit card application) to pay the debt. Example: If a husband passes away and the husband and wife's name is on the Credit Card (it usually is) then the wife is responsible for the Credit Card debt.
