Well there are several conflicts within this short story. There is the conflict found between the Grandfather and his soon to be daughter in law, the conflict between the father and his fiance, between the father and Pete, Pete and his soon to be step mom, and the conflict between the father and the grandfather. The father is in conflict with his fiance. Although he does think that the grandfather should have nice things and be taken care of ( he did buy him the warm expensive blanket) she does not think so. They get into an argument because the woman thinks it is wasteful to spend money on an old man and the father is seen to get angry with her until she finally storms out. Grandfather and his soon to be daughter in law: although the grandfather tries to assure and pacify Pete, the reader does get the vibe that the grandfather feels unappreciated by such a controlling figure. After all, it is the woman that is the reason behind his being sent off to the nursing home in the first place. She does not want him to have nice things, is moving the family to another house, and gets into an argument with the father because he spent money on an old man. Father and grandfather: the ultimate decision to send the grandfather to a nursing home is up to the father although his decision is strongly influenced by his fiance. The grandfather does not want to leave Pete and the family behind. However, the fiance is mentioned to be a younger woman and since Pete is eleven, it can be inferred that the father has been through hardship from either divorce or death of his first wife. The grandfather knows this and tries to better his son's life even if it means going to a nursing home which he calls an institution. Ultimately, the father cries before the grandfather who forgives him, telling him he understands. If there was no conflict, the father would never have cried. His guilt is exposed by Pete. Pete and his father: Pete is bitter towards his father because he cannot believe that his father would send his grandfather away to a nursing home where they can never see each other again. He attempts to distance himself away from his father by saying that his father will be moving to another house with his new fiance. If he is only eleven and his grandfather is going to a nursing home, it can be inferred that Pete will be moving with his dad as well. However, he does not say that, which shows that he does not accept his father's decision. In addition, Pete tells his father that the same fate will befall him once he too gets older. In this way, as Pete attempts not to cry, we see that he has not forgiven his father and is not in agreement with his decision. Pete and the fiance: Pete calls his father's fiance "the woman" and not by any affectionate name. He dislikes and even as the father and his fiance approach the house, the music that the grandfather plays suddenly stops. While Pete cares about his grandfather, the woman clearly does not. Pete also says that the father is moving into another house with this woman and therefore, creating another life with her own children. Thus, she is trying to eliminate Pete and the grandfather from the father's life as it is threatens her control over the father. Pete sees through her superficiality as he says that he does not think that she will take care of him as she has promised.
