Poe is relevant because he is progressive. His Gothic style of writing focuses upon the psychology behind human actions rather than upon spiritual influences. He also had several revolutionary ideas about the short story, major ones being the that a story should have a concrete point, that there should be no word used that is not entirely necessary to the fabric of the story, and that short stories should be able to be read in a single sitting. In general, Poe's stories are very thought provoking and require one to look deep into them beyond the general plot-line. He is especially highly regarded here because he is American.

Edgar Allan Poe had a huge impact on society, by inspiring the world with his poems and ways of writing. e is actually called, "The Father of Mystery" because he created the genre.
