Some experts and specialists consider Oedipus to be a character who was made up, to prove a point and provide entertainment to ancient theater going audiences. A basis for such an opinion is the lack of the telling of the Oedipus story anywhere else.But on the other hand, it indeed is possible that Oedipus really did exist. His story may not have been repeated, because of the heinousness of his offenses against the gods and against his fellow mortals. this question is actually a question that regards a persons opinion. in my opinion, if we are discussing the same oedipus, he is not a "Victim" of fate, because in greek mythology the fates are creatures that are very nasty. "Fate" as in destiny though, that is a whole other matter. i think it was oepidus's destiny to lose his wife, just to teach people a lesson.

In Oedipus and the King was Jocasta's suicide to end her pain or her shame?
my interpretation is that she killed herself from shame or to protect her social standing. Jocasta shows that she knows the truth before Oedipus' dramatic discovery; however, she urges him not to continue digging for the truth, out of what seems to be self preservation for her status. If such a sordid affair were brought to light, she would have a very poor self image. Also, the truth would reveal Oedipus to be the one who would have to be exiled to end the plague in Thebes, so she would likely be exiled too or at the very least, outcast from society. If she was really in so much pain, she would have killed herself the second she came to the conclusion that Oedipus was her son, rather than trying to cover it up because it's very likely, in my opinion, that if she had convinced Oedipus to stop searching for the truth, she probably just would have continued reigning as queen married to her own son. There tends to be no sympathy for perpetrators of incestuous and murderous deeds. Those of the American criminal justice system therefore tend to want to throw as many books as possible at such perpetrators. So any sympathy tends to be lost on the perpetrator. Instead, it's directed to the victim's family, and whomsoever didn't ask to be born in the aftermath of murder or as the result of incest.In the case of Theban King Oedipus, he is both the perpetrator and the victim of his own crimes. It softens somewhat negative public opinion if the incest and the murder turn out to be the exceptions to a generally law abiding, responsible, team member approach to life.
