Caligula hurt the Roman Empire more than helped it. The obvious was his immature actions and his lavish spending. However there was a deeper consequence to his reign and that was not only that he was the first emperor to be assassinated, but it showed the Praetorian Guard that they had the power to usurp an emperor and to replace him. This had significance for other emperors down the line.
