First decide how wide and long and high the project you need lumber for. Then decide what kind of wood you want. Then decide thickness. Take this info to a lumber yard and discuss with one of the people there. He or she might have additional questions for you so take a paper and pencil. Sounds to me like you should hire someone to whatever job you are contemplating.
