Her mother and father, Bronisława and Władysław Skłodowski, were both well-known teachers. For reasons unknown her family went against the culture of the time and thought educating women was a good idea. In 1891 she followed her elder sister Bronisława to study in Paris where she obtained her higher degrees and conducted her subsequent scientific work.

The "why" of her choices in education and research will never be known, but like Ada Lovelace writing computer code before Babbage had even constructed his Analytic Engine, she was inspired to d so. Perhaps it is a natural consequence of an A Class mind being in a world with so much undiscovered in it.
