Plays documenting English history had been popular before Shakespeare started and one of his first dealt with events in the reigns of Henry VI and Edward IV, and he had written a very successful play about the reign of Richard III. Also, he had access to a book called Holinshed's Chronicles, which was a goldmine of ideas for history plays. Plus, there had already been a successful play about Henry V, and the idea of having a play about the youth of this charismatic character was a good one.
