The story of Romeus and Juliet was an Italian folk story. It was written down as a poem "Romeus and Juliet" by Arthur Brooke in 1562 and as a prose story, "The Palace of Pleasure", by William Painter in 1582.
Shakespeare's play "Romeo and Juliet" was written about 1591.
Romeo and Juliet is based on an actual event that happened in Verona in 1303. (You can actually go to Juliets house today and see a statue of her and you can carve your name into it.) He wrote the play about that but he developed some characters. Particularly Mercutio. Look it up on www.wikipedia.org
Shakespeare's inspiration for Romeo and Juliet was the poem "The Tragicall Historye of Romeus and Juliet." This poem was written by Arthur Brooke and was a translation of Italian Matteo Bandello's original story. Both works illustrated the love story of two real people who lived in Verona. Shakespeare's main source was Brooke's poem; he didn't use Bandello's original.
Nobody can ever be really sure what Shakespeare was feeling as he wrote Romeo and Juliet (he didn't keep a journal, you see ;) , but one thing that was surely on his mind was nervousness and money. Shakespeare told the ending of the play before it had even really begun- who does that? Right in the epilogue, he says "Two star-crossed lovers take their life". So he was taking a risk in that the audience might leave since they knew the ending. And money. William Shakespeare was paid by the king, and the king paid by the play. So he would have been very nervous to see if how the king would pay and how the public would react.
If you can watch Romeo and Juliet and feel only one thing, then you really haven't watched it. Like all good plays, it creates a whole bunch of different feelings: joy with the lovers in love, amusement at Mercutio and the Nurse, dislike of Tybalt, anger at Capulet when he forces Juliet to marry Paris, contempt for Paris, frustration with Friar Lawrence as he fails to carry through with his plans, admiration of Juliet's courage when she takes the potion, sorrow at the deaths of the lovers, hope in the reconciliation of Capulet and Montague.
