The "Atomic Age." The end of WWII, ended one world, and started another one. The age of atomic weapons (which meant the end of total war-without risking mutual annihilation), and atomic energy (man could now replace all other fuels, if atomic energy could be refined), caused the newly unleashed (just finished WWII) young generation of Americans to invent and enjoy life. Examples: The WWII B-29 Superfortress (that dropped the A-Bomb to end WWII) helped pioneer "pressurized cabins" for passengers airliners. U-Haul rental trucks were started by a man who purchased GI surplus army trucks, deep sea exploration was pioneered by WWII submarine technology, our race with the Soviets (Russians) to the moon was assisted by WWII Mr. Warner Von Braun, WWII Germany's "People's Car", the VW Bug was a big time seller in the 1960's-plus the VW Van (a real "Hippie" bus)...Optics, miniature radio's (called transister radio's were the new CELL PHONE's of the 1960's EVERYBODY had to have a transister radio), push button telephones, color TV, remote controlled TV's, micro waves...made it easier for people to go Surfing, camping, off-roading. People MADE THEIR OWN off road vehicles in the 1960's. It was rare to buy a factury made off-road dirt bike or 4 four wheel drive. A person had to obtain a military surplus vehicle and make his own from either a VW BUG or a Corvair (a rear engine car out lawed by Ralph Nader). Everything mentioned above led to Environmental Movements; No more cutting down the Redwood trees, no more free camping or parking at the beaches, no more killing of the whales, no more off-roading without a "Green Sticker" and spark arrester, no more camping in the National Forests or other Public lands more than 7 to 14 days in one camp site, no more free National Parks, no more riding without a motorcycle helmet, no more riding in the back of a pick-up truck, Seat belts are now required by law to wear...All of this and MORE is an after shock from the wild 1960's.
