Not always, no. Before joining what became The Beatles, Ringo was the drummer in another band called Rory Storm and the Hurricanes, which was a skiffle group out of Liverpool. At the time, Pete Best was still The Beatles' drummer. Both bands played gigs together, and at times when Best missed shows, Ringo would fill in. He was eventually asked to join the band.
