In an attempt to protect the food sources of local Hawaiian snails from rival snails accidentally introduced by the British in potted plants and the like they brought to the islands, they brought in African carnivorous snails to hunt them.
These enormous snails follow the trail of another (smaller) snail until they catch up with it and eat it.
Unfortunately the giant snails also liked eating the local indigenous snails so the problem was just made worse.
