Like humans, parrots have lots of interior structures and organs, and also share some of the same structures as us. All parrots have a brain, spinal column, trachea, esophagus, lung, crop, gizzard, kidney, heart, liver, ureter, intestines and rectum. The trachea carries air from the mouth or nose to the lungs, enabling the bird to breathe. A bird's crop is a very complex but useful adaptation. If it has to eat a big meal quickly, it's gut fills up with food. Once that happens, instead of having the food continue filling up the gut, it goes down a passageway into the crop. Now, the food fills up the crop, leaving the gut to digest the consumed food! The gizzard is another branch of the stomach. It is tough and rubbery, because it must grind and digest tough food using a muscle. Birds also have a ureter, which is a tube that extends from the kidney into the cloaca, allowing liquid and waste to leave the bird's body. Lastly, the rectum also aids in expelling liquid and wastes from the body. However, the brain, spinal column, esophagus, lung, kidney, heart, liver and intestines serve the same purpose as in our bodies.
